This is our next set of battles following the Minsk campaign. More detailed history will appear shortly but for now here is the first battle.

Scenario 1: Closing The Trap

Points: 750 points

Axis forces: German, 1941 Operation Barbarossa
Allied forces: Soviet, 1941 June Barbarossa!

Rules: Bolt action wargame rules

Battlefield: (Countryside/Hills) Germans come on from two opposite board edges, Soviet deployment zone is a 12” wide channel running along the entire central length of the board, linking the unused board edges.

Set up: The Soviet player may set all of his/her units with in their deployment zone. The German player units are not set up on the table at the start of the game. The German player must nominate half of his force to form the first wave. Of that force he/she must nominate(secretly) which board edge they will enter on. The rest of the force will be left in reserve but will also need to be allocated(secretly) to a board edge for entry purposes.

Objective: The Soviet forces must hold the corridor open by keeping their deployment zone as clear as possible to allow further retreat from Minsk.

First turn: The Germans can move his/her units on to the board from either table edge depending on which side they have allocated the unit to and given a run or advance order.

Game duration: Game last for 6 turns with a normal roll for another turn after that has elapsed.

Scenario rules:

Axis special rules: Reserves

Allied special rules: Hidden set up

Victory: At the end of the game calculate which side has won by adding up the victory points, if one player scores more than 2 victory points more than the other they have won, otherwise it is a draw.
The German player gets 2 victory points for each unit in the Soviet deployment zone at the end of the game and 1 point for every enemy unit destroyed.
The Soviet player gets 2 victory points for each enemy unit destroyed.

With the 2nd part of our mammoth Operation Barbarossa campaign possibly only 48hrs away, I thought it was high time that I posted up my 750pts list I will be using in the first scenario. I have taken a liberty with true historical events and will be using my force as the 4th SS Panzergrenadier Division 'Polizei'. In transit towards A.G.N. they have been redirected to destroy Russian forces that have managed to evade destruction at the Minsk encirclement.

At 750pts my force will consist purely of troops, no armour whatsoever:

A second lieutenant with SMG + 2 additional veterans 91pts

3 Squads of SS troopers - 1 x 10 (NCO/SMG, LMG, 7 Rifles, Fanatics, Tank-hunters) 203pts
1 x 9 (NCO/SMG, LMG, 6 Rifles, Fanatics, Tank-hunters) 185pts
1 x 5 (NCO, 4 Rifles, Tank-hunters) 75pts

2 x MMG teams - 130pts

1 x Flamethrower - 65pts

Think that should come to 749pts. Simple reason for no armour, lack of points.

Seems a shame to not have any tanks rumbling about. :(

Zhe germans can't really take tanks at 750 points, they are too expensive

It's a good list, the problem I think you've had when facing my list has been lack of men. What's your anti armour plan if anyone brings along a cheap tank? Is it avoid and assault if required?

All covered mate, early Waffen-SS squads come with anti-tank grenades and the Tank-hunter rule.

*Slight alteration to the above list as the 2nd MMG has been dropped in favour of bulking out the smaller unit with an LMG*

Rolling map rule
The battlefield is divided into sections, each section is 24” deep and 48” wide. Therefore a 4ft x 4ft board would be 2 sections, a 6ft x 4ft would be 3 sections. Rolling maps consist of 4 sections therefore not all sections will be deployed, the ones deployed are classed as the first sections. In order to develop the sections that are not represented on the battlefield follow these rules. When any attacking unit moves to within 12” of edge B of the last deployed board section, the board section, scenery and all troops slide back replacing the previous section and the new section is placed at edge B and all new scenery and troops (see scenario) deployed. Any attacking squads which are removed due to a board section being removed, may rejoin the fight in the following turn with an advance or run option. Defending units are lost but not classed as destroyed for victory points purposes.

Escape. This rule is an expansion of the rolling map rules. Any escape squads (see scenario) that leave a board edge into an undeployed board section get assigned a movement figure the figure is equal to 24 + (2d6(vehicles) or d6(Infantry)). Make a note of the number, this represents the squads unseen progress. When the vehicle thakes a run or advance order reduce the movement figure by the movement of the action, If the squads movement figure reaches 0 they are then on the next section, create a new movement figure for the next section equal to 24+ (2d6(vehicles) or d6 (infantry. )). If the board section that the escaping squad is resolving a movement figure for is reveled the squad or vehicle are placed on the board section at the point that is equal to the remaining movement figure in inches on that section measured from edge B (the target edge). If the squad reach and leave the last board section they have escaped(see scenario)

These rules are very subject to change.

With scenario 2 up and running, for those interested in such matters here is the SS Totenkopf list I will be using.

1 x Second Lieutenant with veteran two man retinue.

3 x 10 man SS squads all with LMG team, SMG on NCO, anti-tank grenades and fanatics rules.

1 x MMG team.

1 x Panzer III Ausf H or J.

Total 999pts.

Sadly my overconfidence kicked in and I didn't really read up on the scenario rules. This would lead me to arrogantly think I could pick any old list and brush the Russian threat aside. If you are reading the battle report in another thread you will begin to see my folly.

Right time to get my finger out and get my early war Barbarossa Army box and SS finished then. I'll be ready by the end of Feb to start Eastern front battles chaps. Forgive me for my slackness.
