Turn 5.

SS forces were now slowly constricting the Northern end of the road and Russian forces were getting desperate trying to keep the thin corridor open. The Howitzer desperately tried to make a difference by firing into the woods at the LH side SS unit but there aim was wayward as panic began to set in. The 'free' rifle unit's courage also deserted them as they fell to the ground due to a failed advance command check. This left them brutally exposed to the RH side SS unit which opened fire, wiping them out to a man.

Gaps were beginning to appear as the SS with there superior weaponry and training began to make these advantages tell. Desperate to plug a hole the LMG at the Southern most part of the board ran towards the boards centre, but a small, yet moral lifting victory suddenly occurred. The RH side LMG squad travelling up the tree-line suddenly found itself presented with the German Lieutenant and retinue. The Lieutenant heard the footfalls on dried sticks to late as he turned and was gunned down along with his two veterans by accurate rifle fire. Yet yells of jubilation turned to despair as gun-fire raked them from the SS unit undercover of the trees on the opposite side of the road, killing 2 of them. This gave the Germans position away yet again as the Russian MMG fired at them but the SS unit led a charmed life with no casualties taken.

The turn ended with a lot of redeployment as the Russians tried to retake the initiative on the road. The Medic, Commissar and Lieutenant all ran to bolster the centre of the board, supporting the LMG unit that presided there. The German MMG team ran towards it's fellow SS units at the top end of the board and the Germans began to slowly dig in.

The Russians now faced the reality of elite German squads, dug in and blocking there route to safety. It was going to take all the tenacity of the Red Army to break through and the cost to either side would be high.

Turn 6 up next.

Turn 6.

With it possibly the last turn of the game Rayner went for optimum carnage at the beginning. The Howitzer and MMG team both opened fire on the LH side (undercoated) SS unit. But the veterans were well shielded and all shots missed there intended victims. But the RH side SS unit had seen the opening they had been waiting for, as the Howitzer team frantically tried to reposition they had left themselves open, and the exposed 3 man team were gunned down mercilessly.

With another unit gone the Russians were starting to look shaky, yet more shooting, this time from the HMG at the LH SS unit was wayward, the unpainted models luck still holding, although a later command check would result in the unit hitting the 'down' option thus preventing it from moving into a more solid points scoring position. The German Lieutenant vanquishers had more success as one of the Howitzer team's killers was slain, but the Red army needed to have a much higher kill rate to stave off the spectre of defeat.

The Medic, Commissar, Lieutenant and RH LMG squad all advanced, the LMG team trying there luck at the LH SS unit who again took no hits or casualties. It left the German MMG team to run through the woods which finished off the turn and we rolled to see if that was game end.

The dice was rolled, and it was deemed that not enough blood had been spilt yet on the Road Of Despair as we went to a seventh turn.

Turn 7.

It was all about German consolidation at the start of the final turn as the LH SS unit advanced further into the rocks for cover, firing as they moved the shots however proved ineffective against the RH LMG squad (but the pins attached to the Russians did hamper the Red Army units advance move later in the game). More gunfire as the RH SS squad fired down the length of the road but the LMG unit were fast, only 1 of the Russians being removed as a casualty, the SS would have a lot of return fire to contend with.

The response was swift, the LH SS unit was shot at by both the MMG and HMG teams, 1 of the Veterans slain by the concentrated firepower. The RH SS also lost 1 of there number as the central LMG unit opened fire on them. With the RH LMG squad failing it's orders, the Lieutenant advanced, the Commissar went to 'Ambush', and the German MMG team ran for cover behind the rocks at the northern end of the board. It was left to the Russian Medic to end the game as he boldly strolled into range of the RH SS unit, raised his pistol and shot another of the Germans dead. Game over.

After pictures for turns 6 & 7 have been posted up a final analysis and results post will be put up. Will the Red Army prevail or will the Polizei have succeeded in there orders?

So the game had ended and both sides began to count the cost of a hard fought conflict. First up was the units destroyed count-up, this was where the Russians needed to score big as double points (2) was awarded for there unit kills as oppose to the single point for German kills.

Russian kills.

1 x SS Unit
Flamethrower team
Lieutenant and Retinue

Total: 6pts

German kills.

NKVD Unit
1 x LMG Unit
'Free' Rifle Unit
Howitzer Team

Total: 4pts

Russia held a 6 - 4 advantage but the Germans would gain 2pts for every unit of there's which contested the middle of the board. Sadly for the Red Army all 3 of the German units left alive (2 x SS squads and the MMG team) contested, giving the SS a 10pts - 6pts victory.

So in the end the escape route was closed off and many Russians were trapped as the Polizei done there duty (the Red Army would have it's revenge on the 4th SS Panzergrenadiers at Luga, if we decide to cover that battle of course).

In the end it became a straightforward victory for the Germans, but in all fairness it was a tough mission for the Red Army as the SS had most of the advantage from the start. Tree cover, mainly inexperienced troops meant Rayner's troops needed 5's at least to hit and then 5's to kill, and once the SS got into the rocks it became 6's to hit. Tough dug-in troops to budge after that.

Ivan had suffered another setback after Minsk but large supply columns were heading towards Riga to meet the German forces head-on at the mouth of the Daugava. So far the Germans were having a comfortable time of it but I felt that was about to change, dramatically.

Thanks for reading, and I hope your enjoying the drama unfold. Cant tell you to much but our next scenario has a very motorized theme to it  .
