Two core sets would give more dice and templates which helps with ease of play plus the extra ships (2 xwing, 4 tie)
Depends on how big a game you want to start with? You can play with this number to start with however I would prob also get a tie advance to mix it up a bit?
Otherwise pop onto boardgame geek there is a link to a squadron roster builder that you can use to create a balanced squad with additional ships to the size you want.

I am buying it for someone so am not after a "complete" set, just enough that they can comfortably play a 4 player game.

Was aiming to chat with you today regarding it.

With four the extra dice and maneuver templates really help ESP with younger players.

Cheapest rack up is two base sets however y wing mixes it up with the stun ability (ESP with obstacles). Each additional set adds extra pilots which helps.

Depends how much you want to spend?

Advanced tie adds more cards and an imperial with shields...
Each expansion ship adds to the game above the base sets...

I couldn't decide so went two base plus two of each expansion for my birthday...

Found it better than wings of war however I find matches above 100pts per side a bit tiresome. (not that I've played many games).

It's a blast to play however it's a lot easier to get summoners wars or ticket to ride to the table unf.

Thinking about it my first game involved (if you forget the extra dice and templates) one x wing, the ambassador ship from the base set and three ties ( base set plus one).
It was fun however it was me with the rebels against my wife and two kids (4,5). So not an even challenge. If it were two people I would go with one base set as a taster... Soz can't choose for you!

2 starter sets or 1 starter plus one of each expansion. I'd say 2starter will become essential but present has more variety with the advanced/Y-wing. standard game is 1v1 100its each. in which i generally field 2x x-wing + 1 y-wing or 4 ties and an advanced to give you a vague idea of sizes.
