How did our current (Post Shop) players find out about us? BetterZThenDead, Petehere?

I was pointed in the direction of the Games Vault shop by the guy in Wargames Workshop in Northampton after mentioning Blood Bowl. Only managed to attend at couple of times at the store before it closed though...

I too think that it seems a little pointless to have a perfectly good forum and then have to go somewhere else to arrange games. Sorry! :(

Sorry Stuart, is this like some sort of Facebook/Twitter thing? I've never heard of it and don't understand why it would increase players? :?

Allow me to explain. Meetup is a social networking site that is known globally as a way of bringing people together for social / specialist groups. Ultimately, I didn't know anything about it until I discovered the Coventry gaming group Fire and Dice. My google search for gaming groups in the midlands brought up meetup and I have since been going there for 18 months of so.

Now, through Meetup the group has continually expanded its membership (on average 1 new person a week!) through people signed up to meetup already (people from other groups / casual gamers who are interested in the hobby / bored singles looking for social activities) as well as referrals and googling.

They use the site just to confirm attendance and discuss what may be played on a weekly basis - just the sort of thing that I propose we use it for - and the interest and awareness has been excellent.

My instinct is (and I have only paid for a 3 month trial) that simply by migrating our arranging games to meetup, and indicating to potential newbies that there is an active community around the club that we can increase membership and have a presence on the web that won't require a massive cost outlay or time investment from me, the committee or the members.

Again, this is a trial - but my hope is that it will be successful. To give it the best chance, however, I do need all of you to take part, sign up and use the site.

I am happy to help if anyone has any questions but meetup is pretty easy. There's also an iOS / android app if you are so inclined (good for checking in etc.)

FYI, was searching over at meetup because I couldn't be bothered to come here to find the link, and any search for "games", "game" or "board games" doesn't display us as being within 50 miles of Daventry - or in fact at all. Not sure you're getting your money's worth Stuart.

Edited to add: Also doesn't show up when looking for any meetups within 2/5 miles of Daventry.

I also spent some time on
It, and I hate it!

The UI is garbage and the planning seems less specific than the forum

As far as I'm concerned, if it ain't broke then why fix it?

As far as I can see, it's not about planning per se, more about trying to find new players locally. Which is going to be an uphill struggle if the group isn't searchable.

Would be good if there was a forum link somewhere in the description though. From what I remember I didn't like the forum/chat/discussion thread implementation at meetup.

Jack - You have missed the point...

Pete - Yep, I'm working on it. Now got the address working properly. Will have a more prominent link to the site shortly.

I agree that a great deal of what Meetup does isn't great. We just need to get what we want from it.
I will be taking a couple of photos next club night I'm at too - show that we're all (mostly) harmless

Right, re: searchability - we are the top choice for board games locally, but it takes a few days to get past 'Community Clearing'

So just found this discussion thread, I am pretty poor at seeing beyond end of my nose...

Stuart I am watching this with interest to see if it does increase members as I might roll it out to other groups I am involved with. Like here the other groups I mentioned it to were not keen on setting up another account!!! (Bit like me....)

Anyway lets see what happens and if it does make a difference. All clubs need new lifeblood and if this helps then it is worth a shot....

:)

Always good when some one puts there head above the parapet and tries something new.....

;)

Thanks Mark, and all of the early adopters.

I appreciate it.

Hmmm... not my experience...

Maybe its a size of photo problem? You can always sign up through facebook (but set it as private so as not to spam your timeline)

Could you not just print out some flyers/posters to leave on the counters at local hobby/games shops. Most should be happy to help as it will in turn increase their business.
If it wasnt for steve being so chatty at the old shop i wouldnt have known about the club even though it was held upstairs!
