OK - So, Gazza got me thinking.

I wanna read more about the 40K background and have read The Ultramarines Omnibus but where do I start?

It looks like I should buy "Path of the Renegade" and "Firedrake" as they make reference to the beautiful and callous Dark Eldar but some clues as to the order of things, (or is everything a "one off"?)

It may even help me not get shoed.

Thanks,

Tom

If your going to read Firedrake I would start off with Salamander. Although the 2nd book includes Dark Eldar it would seem a shame to not read the whole trilogy.

After that I would start reading The Horus Heresy novels, some of them are a bit weak (i'm thinking Decent Of Angels/Battle For The Abyss) but most are a good read. I found the ones written by Abnett and McNeill usually are the stand-out ones, Fulgrim and Legion are two of the best books i've read imo. Only got up to Battle For The Abyss so cant really comment about the ones after that.

But, the best ever Black Library novel (again, in my humble opinion) has to be Storm Of Iron, the best bit of 40k literature ever. Also, it introduces Honsou who crops up in Dead Sky, Black Sun which you'll have read in the Ultramarines omnibus.

Never read any Dark Eldar specific novels so can't really help you there or give you an opinion.

Agree with you about Legion. Probably one of the best GW tie-ins out there. Funnily enough (in my humble opinion) the best 40k novel is the collected Eisenhorn trilogy, also written by Dan Abnett. Fantastic portrayal of an inquisitor that finds his once firmly held beliefs slowly changing over a long period of time. Funnily enough both these stories feature only limited 'over the top' Space Marine heroics and concentrate more on the human stories... Though there are a couple of stunning 'set pieces' in Eisenhorn! :lots of love:

I thoroughly enjoyed Angels of Darkness. Storm of Iron was also very good. Munson is currently reading the Word Bearers omnibus if you want an opinion on that.

Path of the Incubus is out this month and is the follow up to Path of the Renegade.
