I have been inspired by Gazza's recent thread and have decided to start my own.

Within this blog I plan to talk about tactics, lists and some hobby aspects relating to me playing Cygnar

I have been playing Cygnar for around 3(ish) years now and have had the privilege on various occasions to judge the UK Masters event.

So...hear we go....lets blog!

If I could turn back time.

Yes, my first post was inspired by a Cher song that just came on to the radio.

I thought an interesting first post would be top tips for new players and also thing I wish I could have done differently.

1. Ignore what the internet says

When I first started the blues I went straight onto the Cygnar forums and read a lot about what was good/bad within the faction. I'm sure you new starters have stumbled across all sorts of posts about casters/units being rubbish.

I believe the first Cygnar caster I played after the battlebox was Epic Haley. Now, everyone knows she is great. I'm not denying that- the problem is she is very squishy and Jack the noob didn't really know about protecting his caster. I soon got frustrated with "stupid Haley" and put her in a box for years and there she sat unprimed and unloved until very recently.

I guess, what I'm trying to say is this. Ignore the people on the internet. Play what you think looks cool or things you like the look of. At the end of the day you will end up taking time to paint the things you like nicely and will probably persevere to get good with that caster.

An example of this is the warcaster Jeremiah Kraye in Cygnar. I was drawn to him immediately before I even played WM. He is a lovely figure. However the internet says he is probably tier 3/4 in the 'power scale' of warcasters within Cygnar. I ended up just playing him and would say he is probably the caster I am best at using. That's all down to perseverance on my part because I anted to use the dude that looks like a cowboy on a horse in steam armour.

2. Don't bend the tape measure

I came from Flames Of War and in that bending the tape measure to turn corners was the normal thing to do. I believe this is also true of WH40k. Its an easy thing to fall into the habit of doing.

However this is technically against the rules in WM/H. for corners you must roatate and move in a straight line. Bending tape measures leads to innacurate measuring, which can cause opponents and sometimes TO's to shout at you. Don't do it!

3. You will lose..a lot

The general school of thought is that you will lose your first 20 games of WM/H against people that know the game. This is probably true, the sooner you accept it the better.

The best way to learn is to lose I think. Always ask your opponents for advice post game. Always ask what they would have done differently.

4. Stick to what you know

It is very tempting to play a different caster each week. There are so many in each faction and they are all very unique and cool.

The problem you will have (I know I did!) Is that you will never learn any of your models properly if you keep changing every week!

Stick to the caster you like until you know what they do! Someone once said you shouldn't play a different caster until you can play your current one without needing the card. I don't recall who said that- but I think its a really good way of putting it, if perhaps a bit extreme. But you get the point!

5. Be a good sportsman

I think this is really important. Page 5 sums it up quite well.

This is a great game and the people that play it are a nice crowd. Just be a decent chap and don't take the mickey. I often find declaring what you are doing helps to avoid confusion.

I think thats probably enough for now!

Never really done anything like this before, so feedback and comments would be great. Topic suggestions would be welcome too!

Do I want to be THAT guy

So, I begin part two of my blog type thing with a question that has been bugging me all day.

Do I want to be that guy at the new ayers tournament.

Chances are I will need to play at the Shadow Games tournament. I think we will have an odd number of 'proper' players so I will need to even it out.

This raises some issues as far as I am concerned.

I have decided that I won't place in the tournament. It doesn't seem right to go in and potentially curb stomp the new players (apart from Gazza)

So as far as I see it I have a few options as far as list selection goes.

Play a lower tier cygnar caster of whom I have more experience playing with.

Play a top tier caster (I have limited experience with any of them!) and try my best.

Play something a little bit different for a laugh. One example would be that I can take Stormwall and a caster in a 15pt game. I think this would be an interesting experience as far as playing against a big single threat instead of multiple smaller targets.

My final option is to try some mercs- I have 0 games with mercs so would be on a relatively level pegging. However I'm not sure how much of a game I will give my opponents.

So there you have it gentlemen.

Do I bring my A game and if anyone complains just quote page 5, or do I play something I don't have a clue about?

I would appreciate the opinions as it has really been bugging me!

Surely it depends on what you want to get out of the tournament? You've never struck me as the "win at all costs" powergamer-type. Take something new and gain some experience with it...

... Or you could just smash the living daylights out of everyone! Play like you've got a (bigger) pair! :lots of love:

For me this tourney is about creating a positive play experience.

I want to continue building a community in Dav city.

I would like to give the opponents a fair and challenging games without making them feel that I'm not trying
