I personally prefer the my blitzers look like blitzers and my catchers look like catchers and neither look like linemen method :P

But concede, on teams where their positions are not immediatley identifiable something needs doing. (on my orcs I painted their hats as per this colour code).

You can see where some teams it would be pointless... Matts for example

"the black bases are the orges, the red bases are the snotlins" :lots of love:

Depends, when u get a team fully painted by the likes of Tom or Dave, the last thing i would do would be to slap some bright red paint on a base. besides, some teams are so blatent there is just no need. personally if u cant tell the difference between a zombie and a werewolf, u should have gone to specsavers. in the case of some GW teams, this is very usefull, i keep saying i dont like their teams much cuz all the possitionals look the same at a glance.
In the case of the new team, as the pics dave puts up shows, there is still no need as its pretty obvious.
Horned helm = Lino
Winged helm = Runner/catcher
Skull cap helm = Ulf
Mohawk+claw+awesome pose = Blitzer
guy with the ball = Thrower

simples :)

the biggest culprits for me are the conversions and the GW teams, im certainly not going to complain about people using it but far as im concerned as long as they are numbered i dont mind either way. and unless it was not totally obvious i wouldnt do it myself.

Hence the colour crazy Lizards Dave, if i ever take Lizards in and i hear somone say, 'thats that crazy pink Saurus with MB Tackle, Pile on, frenzy...think ill keep my elves away from him' its done its job :lots of love:

See now for me, the whole this helmet means this. No helmet means this isn't really good enough (no offence Aaron dude)

I find trying to remember that while playing games is just one thing too many.

The problem I found is that identifying your own team is always easy.

With Rayner Norse for example, he knows all of his positional obviously but I found identifying players (based on their helmets) tough, same goes for Al's skaven.

I am a huge advocate of coloured bases and personally don't think it detracts from the paint job on the player.

A compromise is to paint the number a different colour. Saves making the base some vile primary colour, but provides the required information. Of course this only fully works if you sign up to my philosophy of numbers on front and back of bases, if the only number is on the players back it's kind of useless.

There have only been a couple of people I played where it was (for someone who didnt own their team and play it every game) impossible to tell which number or position the models were. In most cases these were GW models and by people who rarely visit the forums. Its not a massive problem, I could ask every turn who was around my players. It just slows the game down and my pitch awareness goes down the tube.

It would be nice if this threads suggestion (numbers front and back, colour indication) were at least adhered to in spirit, but I can sort of understand people not wanting to mess with their models paint jobs or being too lazy to paint. Or perhaps for them misdirection is part of their tactic and game.

Some people get the luck leech to come and mess with their opponents dice others make positioning a guessing game :)

I am keen to hear what Matt thinks and for those that have played my half painted mess of a team to feedback whether the coloured bases helped at all for the past 2.5 seasons?

The worst feedback I have had so far is vs Better days who mistakenly blitzed a model witchelf with 4 strength instead of 3 because my 2 looked like a 1 at a glance.

All good points Mr Draven.

Totally agree, I know that in the past I have made mistakes due to unclear player numbering/ positional differentiation.

I think some form of colour coding should be mandatory

Which coloured bases wouldn't rectify.

I made a similar mistake vs's pauls frogs where when i looked at the number his 9 looked like a 4 (or the other way around)... thankfully we play in good spirit and he let me change my mind when i realised it was the blitzer with tackle rather than the one without. Again, coloured bases wouldnt rectify this either.

I could get on board with coloured numbers. Although draven and sparky are right. No point in focusing on colours if u can't read the numbers. But a little understanding helps here. I was playing someone last season, think it may have been rayner who blitzed the guy who had dodge and didn't realise when he didnt put him down he just said no worries I should have looked and asked. Pain in a backside sometimes maybe but a little communication goes a long way :)

there is a big difference between not noticing a given skill and only realising after doing a given action and mistaking a 9 for a 4 or a 1 for a 2 due to clarity of markings
