Bit random. Not really sure where to post, so...

Anyone ever tried painting a 'halved' or 'quartered' Space Marine colour scheme? Just looking for a little advice really. Tried trawling the net but got bore/sidetracked so thought I'd ask you guys instead! :P :lots of love:

Wow! Was just wondering whether you used any particular technique to get the straight line down the middle of the model? Is it possible to use some form of masking tape or is it easier to draw the line freehand? Bare in mind I'm painting terminators which I think might be slightly easier as they're a larger, flatter surface especially at the back (no power pack). Also planning to cheat and do the head in a single colour too! :P :lots of love:

I just free handed it tbh. Can imagine masking would be ball ache unless its a vehicle.

That's what I was thinking... The only thing with terminators is that the back 'canopy' is quite a large expanse and I don't trust my freehand enough to make it look good. At the moment I'm torn between a halved green and black scheme and this...

The only thing is I'm interested in the Lions Sable successor Chapter. Maybe I can go with the Disciples of Caliban scheme and claim that was the Lions Sables original scheme and it was used again when the Disciples were founded. :?

If you don't try when will opportunity occur for you to improve your freehand? I find do the lighter colour first then cut the darker up to it, ie green then cut in with the black. Very often i have to recut in until I'm happy. Practice makes perfect and I practice a lot and am perfect at nothing but still continue on with that method as long as I keep improving.
Hope this helps.

Need some serious inspiration/motivation to get a move on with these guys...

Image

Finally settled on a 1450pts list, now I just need to make my mind up regarding a colour scheme. Almost bottled out a couple of times and chose the simpler Unforgiven schemes (Guardians of the Covenant and Disciples of Caliban) but the Ragman's comment about pushing myself made me think about perhaps doing squads as different Successor chapters. The one's I fancy having a crack at are

Angles of Redemption
Angels of Vengeance
Disciples of Caliban
Guardians of the Covenant

I think this would give me an opportunity to try a couple of things I've not done before (halved colour schemes, highlighting black armour, starting from a white basecoat/undercoat).

Just need to decide now which chapter to start with..? :D

A white/light grey undercoat makes all those bright colours really stand out, I base coat nearly everything white or light grey primer. Black gives a more gritty feel which is nice on certain models and colours. My theory is the colours that need to be bright are weaker colours that need a light primer to stand out. The annoying bi product of this is that on some parts you need to go round and undercoat with black to regain the grit and definition need on some areas, not fun but worth it. For example a space marine that is quartered yellow and red (howling griffons) needs undercoating in white/light grey primer due to colour strength.

Tackle things you need to practice one at a time so for example if your gonna do quarters, do it with colours you know you are happy with, ie not black or a white undercoat.

Painting black, Take highlighting very slowly it can go wrong very fast, I use codex grey (dark grey) and then if you hit codex grey then add white, if you are using white with black use tiny tiny amounts of white. As a general rule if you feel happy with the level you have got to and feel another may be a step to far STOP. Don't ruin a good job with over highlighting experience will give you a better and better judgement, look at old work, I have models (especially black) that I now think I could have highlighted a bit more now but at the time was happy so stopped to not ruin it. Being able to highlight black and white improves you ability to highlight and use other colours, well it did me.

I suggest Angels of Vengeance, Black undercoat, no quarters or halves and just black highlighting(which you wanna try) which hopefully will see an overall improvement in painting skills.

Hope this helps and hope you try some new things :D

Cheers for the advice Rayner! The white undercoat would be used for the Angels of Redemption as they have a halved bone and green colour scheme. The rest would probably end up with a black basecoat as either they're black, black/green or metallic silver. Think I'll start with the silver and red Guardians of the Covenant. That way I won't 'balls up' the first mini and give up all together... Which is the usual plan of action! :? :lots of love:

I must admit that pushing myself to paint one of the 'halved' paint scheme Chapters is appealling. Always liked the look of the Angels of Redemption.
