I assume that posting a short excerpt of a copywriten rules for the purposes of discussion or query would be allowed? If so then some of the wording needs to be changed.

We are 40 people, rules to this granularity seem more hassle than they are worth, especially when it can all be covered under one rule of "don't be an idiot".

Posted from my phone. Please excuse my bad spelling.

Ok, how about these:

1. Don't be an offensive idiot.
(This includes slurs against race, religion, gender, sexuality, age, game choices and anything you would not say in polite conversation with people you don't know well.)

2. Outside of the Trash Talk thread, insulting or harrassing another member (flaming) is not allowed. Any time a member feels they have been directly and personally insulted or harrassed, this rule will be enforced.

3. Keep on topic, no trolling (posting purely to get an angry reaction from other members).

4. Don't spam. Any advertising that has little or no relevance to this forum will be deleted as will the user who posted it.

5. Copyrighted material may only be posted if the source and author are quoted and the material is then discussed.

6. Arguing with a moderation is not allowed. (If you have been moderated and don't understand why, you may ask for clarification. If that request is judged to be sarcastic or argumentative, this rule will be enforced.)

7. If you were banned once, attempting to rejoin the forum under a new account is not allowed unless it has been agreed with the moderators.

And any infraction of those 7 rules is dealt with in the way Harroguk proposed:

Harroguk wrote:
First warning comes with a 24 hour ban from the forums
Second comes with a 72 hour ban
Third comes with permanent ban.

I don't care how badly it screws your organising of games or anything else. If someone reports your post, I would read it and make a judgement. If that judgement went against you, obviously you couldn't immediately complain as you would banned for 24 hours. However if you came back and complained about it then say bye bye for another 72, complain again then find a different forum.

... I would allow warnings to drop off after 6 months. ;) you might get back on the forums at some point.

A fair compromise?

The goblin dodge dice that were shown off
The shadowgames Star wars stuff thread etc

Hmmm not sure now, though I did say anything that wasn't relevant to the forum would be considered spam - gaming shops and people selling their second hand gaming stuff would be fine.

People trying to sell SPAM LINK and other advertising is spam.

That stuff is fairly obvious and quickly dealt with though. Hmm - could remove that rule as I think the moderators keep on top of it well enough.

Helen's Rules seem much closer to something easy for people to read and to be enforced.

IMO,
Scrap Rule 4 "No Spamming", it is covered under Rule 3 "Keep on topic"

Scrap Rule 5, we are 40 people, the worst that will happen is we get hit with a Cease and Desist letter requesting we take down copyrighted materials. Easy enough to comply with if it happens. This is not to say that I advocate the sharing of full sets of rules here, just that I don't think it is a major issue.

I would add a final rule of something like "Anything deemed to not be of benefit for the forum by all moderators" to cover anything not covered in the above rules.

Ok, so our rules would then be:

1. Don't be an offensive idiot. This includes slurs against race, religion, gender, sexuality, age and gaming choices. It includes swearing, and anything you wouldn't say in polite conversation with people you don't know very well.

2. Outside of the Trash Talk thread, insulting or harrassing another member is not allowed. Any time a member feels they have been directly and personally insulted or harrassed, this rule will be enforced.

3. Keep on topic. No trolling (posting purely to get an angry reaction from other members), or spamming.

4. Arguing with a moderation is not allowed. (If you have been moderated and don't understand why, you may ask for clarification. If that request is judged to be sarcastic or argumentative, this rule will be enforced.)

5. If you were banned once, attempting to rejoin the forum under a new account is not allowed unless it has been agreed with the moderators.

6. The moderators reserve the right to review content and decide if it is not appropriate or beneficial for the forum, to remove or edit posts where this is the case, and issue Warnings where any of the above rules have been broken.

And our banning system could run thus:

Any infractions of these rules will result in a Warning being issued to the member's account.
A first Warning will result in a 24 hour ban from posting on the forum.
A second Warning will result in a 72 hour ban from posting on the forum.
A third Warning will result in a permanent ban from posting on the forum.

Permanently banned members may request to return to the forum after 6 months, and moderators will review bans on a case by case basis. Moderators reserve the right to refuse the request.

First and Second Warnings automatically expire from an account 6 months from the date they were each issued, however moderators reserve the right to permanently ban members who are judged to be abusing this facility in order to repeatedly offend.

Looks good to me.

I still don't agree that any warning will result in a ban

Thats why it's only 24 hours, enough for people to take a step back (forced or otherwise)
